New wine in new bottles: Visualizing the progression over time of the epidemics of tobacco smoking and obesity through the use of modified population pyramids
Tobacco smoking and obesity greatly contribute to premature death and disease in developed countries. In order to measure the extent to which these risk factors affect a population, as well as to describe the progression of these epidemics over time, routine surveillance of the prevalence of obesity and smoking is carried out by international organizations, national departments of health, and statistical offices. To this end, summary measures—like age-standardized rates, and tabular and graphical representations, such as maps—are used. In this study, we argue that population pyramids, a widely used demographic tool, may be easily adapted to provide relevant visual information for public health purposes. By means of two juxtaposed histograms, one for each gender, population pyramids show either the proportion or the actual number of subjects in each age and gender subgroup. We suggest that stratifying each bar of the two histograms according to ordinal categories of the health condition or risk factor examined may provide useful details on the relationship between this condition or factor and key demographic variables like age and gender. In addition, the actual number of exposed subjects can be immediately read from the graph. We therefore built a statistical routine with Stata to create modified population-pyramid plots separately for overweight/obese and current/former smoker. Data were derived from five National Health Interview Surveys carried out in Italy between 1983 and 2005. For each survey, data on age, gender, smoking status, height, and weight were extracted for subjects aged 20–99. Age and gender-specific prevalence rates of overweight/obese, and of current/former/never smoker were computed and applied to population estimates performed by the Italian national statistical institute (ISTAT). The resulting estimated numbers of underweight/normal weight/overweight/obese individuals and of former/current/never smokers were used to create the modified population pyramids. In conclusion, modified population pyramids may contribute to assessing the impact of risk factors on a population in absolute terms, to evaluating how these risk factors are distributed by age and gender, and to assessing how the age and gender distribution of these risk factors changes over time.
Volumes of Space as Subsystems
As a novel approach with possible relevance to semiclassical gravity, we
propose to define regions of space as quantum subsystems. After recalling how
to divide a generic quantum system into ``parts'', we apply this idea to a free
scalar field in Minkowski space and we compare two different localization
schemes. The first scheme is the standard one, induced by the local
relativistic fields; the alternative scheme that we consider is the one induced
by the Newton-Wigner operators. If degrees of freedom are divided according to
the latter, the Hamiltonian of the field exhibits a certain amount of
non-locality. Moreover, when a region of space is cut off from the rest
according to the Newton-Wigner scheme, the geometric entropy is finite and
exhibits a sensible thermodynamic behaviour.Comment: 10 page
Organic Livestock Production- A Bibliometric Review
Due to the increasing interest in organic farming, an overview of this research area is provided through a bibliometric analysis conducted between April and May 2019. A total of 320 documents were published up until 2018 on organic livestock farming, with an annual growth rate of 9.33% and a clear increase since 2005; 268 documents have been published in 111 journals. Germany is the country with the largest number of published papers (56 documents). Authors’ top keywords (excluding keywords used for running the search) included: animal welfare (29 times), animal health (22 times), cattle (15 times), grazing (10 times), and sheep (10 times). This could indicate that more research has been done on cattle because of the importance of this species in Germany. Moreover, the prevalence of the terms ‘animal welfare’ and ‘animal health’ may indicate that the research on organic livestock production has been focused on these two areas. The bibliometric analysis indicates that: i) countries focused the organic livestock production research on their main production, and ii) more research in species other than cattle and sheep is needed
Renormalized Thermal Entropy in Field Theory
Standard entropy calculations in quantum field theory, when applied to a
subsystem of definite volume, exhibit area-dependent UV divergences that make a
thermodynamic interpretation troublesome. In this paper we define a
renormalized entropy which is related with the Newton-Wigner position operator.
Accordingly, whenever we trace over a region of space, we trace away degrees of
freedom that are localized according to Newton-Wigner localization but not in
the usual sense. We consider a free scalar field in d+1 spacetime dimensions
prepared in a thermal state and we show that our entropy is free of divergences
and has a perfectly sound thermodynamic behavior. In the high temperature/big
volume limit our results agree with the standard QFT calculations once the
divergent contributions are subtracted from the latter. In the limit of low
temperature/small volume the entropy goes to zero but with a different
dependence on the temperature.Comment: 27 pages, final versio
Modelling a Particle Detector in Field Theory
Particle detector models allow to give an operational definition to the
particle content of a given quantum state of a field theory. The commonly
adopted Unruh-DeWitt type of detector is known to undergo temporary transitions
to excited states even when at rest and in the Minkowski vacuum. We argue that
real detectors do not feature this property, as the configuration "detector in
its ground state + vacuum of the field" is generally a stable bound state of
the underlying fundamental theory (e.g. the ground state-hydrogen atom in a
suitable QED with electrons and protons) in the non-accelerated case. As a
concrete example, we study a local relativistic field theory where a stable
particle can capture a light quantum and form a quasi-stable state. As
expected, to such a stable particle correspond energy eigenstates of the full
theory, as is shown explicitly by using a dressed particle formalism at first
order in perturbation theory. We derive an effective model of detector (at
rest) where the stable particle and the quasi-stable configurations correspond
to the two internal levels, "ground" and "excited", of the detector.Comment: 13 pages, references added, final versio
